| A native of Texas, Pat
Staub received a BA in art from Louisiana State
University and later briefly studied ceramics
at the University of Florida. When Pat and her
family moved to New Orleans she completed a
master’s degree in education and taught
for two years in a private school Several years
later, after moving to Athens, Staub returned
to studying ceramics at the University of Georgia
and in 1980 set up her own pottery workshop.
As a potter, Pat began producing a line of functional
dinnerware decorated with blue and green over
a dark body. A desire for more color led to
her using a very white clay body heavily decorated
with an array of hues: green, gray, red, purple
and yellow dominated by blue. For several years,
Staub marketed this work in gift shops along
the East Coast.
In the late 80’s Staub’s work changed
dramatically, becoming a contemporary, sculptural
and semi-functional recalling the Art Deco style.
The work embodied contrasts of form, color and
texture. Later her work became more organic,
but retained her concerns for texture and bright
color contrasts. Currently, she is revisiting
her approach to past styles and methods: brightly
colored and decorated functional ware.
