While pursuing an art education at the University of Georgia, Brooks Burgess
became interested in pottery to the extent that he went on to earn his
MFA in Ceramics at North Texas State University. Upon graduation, he
accepted a one-year appointment at Berea College in Kentucky as the Graduate
Apprentice in clay. It was here that he sharpened his production skills
while designing and developing a line of functional pottery.
Since his return to Athens in 1988, Brooks
has taught Art in public middle and high schools
in and around Georgia, at Anderson College in
South Carolina, the Spruill Center in Atlanta,
Good Dirt Studios, and has conducted workshops
for colleges and public art organizations. He
currently maintains his own studio in Winterville,
Georgia..
While Brooks primarily focuses on form, striving
for simplicity and elegance, some of his work
also has a sense of humor. Often a play on words
becomes the catalyst for his pots, as seen in
his "fish sticks" candlesticks, dog whistles,
and face jugs.
